Measurement - Disturbance and Contextuality

چکیده

Many seemingly paradoxical effects are known in the predictions for outcomes of measurements made on preand post-selected quantum systems. A class of such effects, which we call “logical preand post-selection paradoxes”, bear a striking resemblance to proofs of the Bell-Kochen-Specker theorem, which suggests that they demonstrate the contextuality of quantum mechanics. Despite the apparent similarity, we show that such effects can occur in noncontextual hidden variable theories, provided measurements are allowed to disturb the values of the hidden variables.

Logical pre- and post-selection paradoxes are proofs of contextuality

If a quantum system is prepared and later post-selected in certain states, “paradoxical” predictions for intermediate measurements can be obtained. This is the case both when the intermediate measurement is strong, i.e. a projective measurements with Lüders-von Neumann update rule, or with weak measurements where they show up in anomalous weak values. Leifer and Spekkens [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 2...

Advanced Analysis of Quantum Contextuality in a Psychophysical Double-Detection Experiment

The results of behavioral experiments typically exhibit inconsistent connectedness, i.e., they violate the condition known as “no-signaling,” “no-disturbance,” or “marginal selectivity.” This prevents one from evaluating these experiments in terms of quantum contextuality if the latter understood traditionally (as, e.g., in the Kochen-Specker theorem or Bell-type inequalities). The Contextualit...

On contextuality in behavioural data.

Dzhafarovet al.(Dzhafarovet al.2016Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A374, 20150099. (doi:10.1098/rsta.2015.0099)) reviewed several behavioural datasets imitating the formal design of the quantum-mechanical contextuality experiments. The conclusion was that none of these datasets exhibited contextuality if understood in the generalized sense proposed by Dzhafarovet al.(2015Found. Phys.7, 762-782. (doi:10.10...

Certainty in Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle: Revisiting definitions for estimation errors and disturbance

We revisit the definitions of error and disturbance recently used in error-disturbance inequalities derived by Ozawa and others by expressing them in the reduced system space. The interpretation of the definitions as meansquared deviations relies on an implicit assumption that is generally incompatible with the Bell-Kochen-SpeckerSpekkens contextuality theorems, and which results in averaging t...
